teacher's pet

It's hard to admit the you, as a teacher, have a favorite.
This is the time of year that it hits home though...as the days and hours and minutes slowly tick towards the last day.
And you know after that day, they will no longer be yours anymore.

I, of course, love all my students!

But there is always one...and you know that NO one will get him quite the way that you did. (even though you hope that not to be true.)

When he fights, you know to ask him when dad is leaving for his trucking route or if he is getting delayed coming home. You also know how long that means he will be pissed at the world.

You know that when he has to call home for being in trouble, it hits harder to call dad than it does mom.

You know that he has a sense of pride and refusing to return his field trip permission slip wasn't because he didn't want to go but because he didn't have the money to pay for it.

You know that he has made such progress this year. In fact, the other day at recess, he stepped off the basketball court when someone made him mad to take a minute to regain himself. You did that! He didn't have those skills before you!

You know that every day this week, You have gotten an extra, come out of the bus line, hug.

You know that letting go of the tough ones is so much harder...

  1. I remember THAT teacher, the one who cared enough to look past the bad boy and make a student out of me. I remember that he cared more than he had to....30+ years later, thank you Mr Orr :-)

Your guy will remember that about you :-)

  3. That made me tear up. Of course I am on my cycle:) But, every Summer I pray that my child will have that teacher in the Fall that will "get him/her." Every Fall God faithfully answers that prayer with a new experience that touches that child in a special way. On behalf of all of the parents that read your blog..."Thank you for being a teacher!" I bet the end of the year is a really hard time for you since you care so much.

  5. I'm not sure why, but this post really made me teary. You are amazing. You probably won't ever be able to fathom the difference you've made in this little boy's life. Being understood...NOTHING compares to that.

I hope with everything I have that my daughters get to have teachers like you.

  10. Happy SITS day!!
I'm so glad you're THAT KIND of teacher, the world needs more of them. Most teachers I've had had already become jaded by the system by the time I had them in school and were often cruel and didn't care. But I still remember THAT teacher for me. She was a high school English teacher who took the time to get to know ME, and would specially pick out books she wanted me to read for reports so she could read how I connected with it and dissected it. She encouraged me to be a writer and I will forever have a place in my heart for her.
Teachers like that, and like you, change a student's life for the better.

  11. OMG, SO true. The ones you spend the most time with are the ones who are tough to let go. There's always a boy every year who wins my heart (although it's tough-love!)
    I teach 2nd :)
    Happy SITS day!

  12. That's the kind of teacher I wish my son had. This guy, I think he's just tired. He retired and came back because his wife had health problems. OK, I get it, but it would be nice if he could at least go through the motions of teaching the kids something!

  13. I totally understand. I prayed for mine as I filled out his attendance records and passed him on to middle school.

  14. Teaching isn't just about passing the state-mandated test, its giving the kind of life-long lessons you passed along to your little guy.
I hope you are appreciated by the parents, the taxpayers and the school board!
